2015-2016 F-150 LX Model V6s with K&N Cold Air Intake Get More Horsepower and Torque
- Jun 15, 2016
America's pickup truck of choice has been the Ford F-Series for more than three decades and the F-150 is practically a dynasty unto itself. In facing and out-pacing the competition, Ford has continued to innovate and the new-for-2015 F-150 platform, styling and aluminum body on a beefier steel chassis – its13th generation and 68th iteration – could be the most unique.
The big news at its debut was the F-150s significant weight reduction achieved by constructing the cab, hood, and bed from military-grade aluminum which eliminated at least 400 pounds. While generating snarky commentary from opponents about real men not driving a beer can, the undisputed truth of a lighter-weight vehicle is its ability to haul bigger payloads, handle heavier tows, use less fuel, maneuver more easily and even be quicker in competition. Hence, Ford's ability to remain the pickup sales leader in the U.S. The base F-150 (LX model) is powered by the Cyclone 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 naturally aspirated, electronic fuel-injected engine producing 283hp and 255lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Standard is a choice of three cab and bed sizes, 17-in wheels, air conditioning, split front and rear seats, tilt/telescope steering, manual door locks, windows and mirrors, a four- or six-speaker sound system. Towing capacity is rated at 7,600lb. This is all enough to get you started off to work or play in competent comfort and modern pickup truck style. There are two additional V6 power plants available for the F-150, but if you aren't quite in the market for the high-performance turbocharged 2.7L (325hp and 375lb-ft of torque) or 3.5L (365hp and 420lb-ft) EcoBoost engines, there is a performance enhancer that can help your base 3.5L breathe better and have more energy: the K&N 63-2596 AirCharger® air intake system.
How many horsepower and how much more torque? Dynomometer test results for a 2016 F-150 with the 3.5L V6 3.5L produced an estimated 12.27hp increase at 5686rpm and an estimated 9.87 lb-ft of torque increase at 3511rpm. The 63-2596 is one of K&N's newest air intakes, designed specifically for the 2015-2016 F-150s. It replaces the factory intake with a non-metallic, rotationally molded tube that has been aerodynamically engineered to drive a huge amount of fresh air into the engine intake and accommodate the factory EVAP and crank case vent hoses. It connects to the engine with adapters made of silicon and reinforced nylon. Completing the system is K&N's oversized washable, reusable cotton gauze air filter, equipped with a chrome top and protected by a heat shield, that is fitted to the OEM air box space. Its unique engineering and construction allow more air to pass through the filter medium, trapping and holding more dirt, dust, and particles. It is more robust that K&N's other replacement filters, and can last up to 100,000 miles (depending on driving conditions) before cleaning is required. If you want to inspect and service the system more frequently, that's OK too. It is protected by K&N's Million-Mile Warranty, but should you need another filter for some reason, part number RC-5173 is available. This intake system is relatively easy to install, usually in 90 minutes or less using commonly available tools.
