50-State Street Legal Performance Air Intakes for 3rd & 4th Gen Mitsubishi Eclipse
- Mar 30, 2015
Before Mitsubishi began exporting the Lancer Evolution VIII into the North American market the Mitsubishi Eclipse was one of the hottest sport compact cars on the street. The Eclipse was attractive, fun to drive, and affordable. First and second generation Mitsubishi Eclipse models had an available turbo charged engine making the Eclipse one of the most commonly modified cars at the beginning of the sport compact tuner movement. Third and fourth generation Eclipse models lost the turbo charged option, but made up for it with a more powerful available V6 engine.
While much of the focus has been placed on Mitsubishi EVO performance upgrades in the last 10+ years, diehard third and fourth gen Eclipse owners looking to upgrade their cars with a street legal air intake system should look no further than K&N air filters. K&N air intake systems increase performance by reducing air intake tract restriction and reducing turbulent airflow. Mitsubishi Eclipse Typhoon series air intake upgrades from K&N replace the accordion like intake hose and restrictive factory air filter, as well as air filter box, with a mandrel bent aluminum air intake tube coupled to a K&N high-flow air filter. The legendary cotton gauze design of a K&N air filter provides superior airflow and superior performance with the added benefit of reusability.
K&N offers two 50-state street legal air intake systems for 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.4L 4-cylinder models. Both intakes are identical in design; however K&N air intake 69-6506TS is finished in a silver color powder coat and K&N air intake 69-6506TR is protected in a brilliant red powder coat finish. Both intakes have been specifically designed for third generation 2000-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.4L 4G64 powered models. They have been dyno tested on an otherwise stock 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.4L and shown to provide an estimated increase of 5.88 HP and 7.33 lb-ft of torque.
Also available for 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse 3.0L V6 models is a complete cold air intake system available in two color options. 2000-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse 3.0L V6 air intake, number 69-6501TB, comes in a candy blue colored powder coated finish. If blue isn’t your thing, the 2000-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse 3.0L V6 air intake, number 69-6501TP, is also available in a silver powder coated color. When dyno tested in-house on K&N’s dynamometer this intake was shown to provide an estimated additional 6.9 horsepower and 6.25 lb-ft of torque on a stock 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse 3.0L. No additional modifications are needed to improve performance with a K&N air intake system.
More changes occurred to the Mitsubishi Eclipse when the fourth generation was introduced in 2006. The 4G64 standard inline four was replaced with a more modern 4G69 2.4L engine incorporating Mitsubishi's MIVEC Variable Valve Timing technology. The 3.0L V6 engine was dropped from the Eclipse’s list of available options and replaced by the 3.8-liter 6G75 V6 engine. The 6G75 3.8L V6 was rated at over 260 horsepower and made the fourth and final generation Mitsubishi Eclipse the most powerful version yet. Owners of fourth generation 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse 3.8L V6 models looking for a boost in horsepower can easily improve performance with a 50-state street legal air intake system from K&N filters. K&N short ram air intake 69-6502TR replaces restrictive factory air induction components with a free-flowing red powder coated mandrel bent aluminum air intake tube, an application specific air filter heat shield, and a high-flow K&N air filter for superior airflow and superior performance. A combination of K&N’s highly-engineered air intake design, and the restrictive nature of the car’s stock components, allows K&N air intake 69-6502TR to free up a significant amount of horsepower otherwise lost to the driver. When installed on a 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse 3.8L V6, K&N air intake number 69-6502TR was shown to free up an estimated 13.07 hp and 12.81 lb-ft of torque at 5,400 RPM. K&N air intake systems are an easy to install 50-state street legal Mitsubishi Eclipse performance upgrade that can be installed in about 90 minutes or less using basic hand tools. By following K&N’s simple step-by-step instructions owners of third and fourth generation Mitsubishi Eclipse models can experience increased performance without sacrificing engine protection. K&N air intakes are designed to maintain all necessary factory connections and do not require any additional modifications to experience a boost in performance. K&N backs its air filters and air intake systems with a 10-year/million mile limited warranty so owners can rest assured that their intake system will probably outlast their car.
