Dodge Durango & Jeep Grand Cherokee K&N Cabin Air Filter Helps Keep Owners Comfortable
- May 5, 2016
When it comes to describing a vehicle of capability, toughness, and all-around utility, most people of a certain age will say, "Jeep". When we Google the first sport utility vehicle, there's the Willys Jeep Station Wagon of 1948. Today it is the Grand Cherokee that tops the SUV roster, after its roll-out in 1992.
When it comes to describing an all-American full-size pickup truck, people of all ages will probably say "Dodge". It was popular post-WWII as Jeep, and for its utility and affordability as the mid-priced line in Chrysler's automotive offerings. After decades of service in the pickup segment, Dodge's Durango joined the SUV family, making its debut in 1998. Until 2010, these vehicles were characterized by body-on-frame construction atop a truck chassis with long wheelbases capable of towing up to 7,000 lbs and seating five to eight. They could pretty much climb any mountain, ford any stream, and transport any little league team in comfort and safety. In the U.S. they were classified as light trucks and not as closely regulated for fuel efficiency and emissions as passenger cars. Today that's different, including the air inside the cabin. Since 2011 the third-generation Durango and fourth-generation Grand Cherokee have shared the same unibody platform and much of the same running gear, four-wheel independent suspension and two standard engines. Typical of Chrysler's emphasis on engineering and safety, both got electronic stability control, a tire pressure-monitoring system, power driver and passenger seats, satellite radio, USB/iPod interface, and back-up camera. In fact, the 2011 Grand Cherokee won 30 awards for off-road capability, luxury, value, best in class, and safety, including Top Safety Pick for 2011 from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Best Buy for 2011 by Consumers Digest, and Truck of the Year by The Detroit News. They also share well-designed air conditioning systems with dual-zone climate control with a cabin air filter to make interior air as clean and fresh as possible for all occupants. In 2015, the HVAC controls were integrated into an 8.4-in center touchscreen. Although there are no government-issue rules for interior air quality, there is a maintenance rule for the cabin air filter that does a tremendous amount work for us and helps protect the HVAC system. Possibly taken for granted until we notice the air conditioning is not really cooling a full-size SUV, the cabin air filter needs to be changed or cleaned at least annually or about every 12,000 miles. It is a simple service requiring less than 10 steps and K&N can get the job done with the VF3012 washable, reusable cabin air filter. The same nearly square K&N VF3012 replacement cabin air filter is designed to be used in 2011-1016 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos. It is constructed of a special electrostatically treated synthetic media in a sturdy and flexible frame. It has been engineered for a larger surface area to capture more dust and dirt particles than stock paper filters, plus slow the entry of most spores, mold, bacteria, and germs. In the Durango and Grand Cherokee, the filter is mounted behind the shelf in the glove box, both of which need to be removed to access the filter compartment. K&N provides illustrated instructions for the VF3012 that show how to get to the cover that secures the filter compartment. After removing and disposing of the existing filter, the housing needs to be cleared of any additional debris before the K&N VF3012 can go in. It is a quick process that will keep the climate control performing at its best for months to come. The best part of the story is the VF3012 can be washed more frequently if desired and reused for the lifetime of the vehicle. The 99-6000 refresher kit's cleaning spray and refresher fluid will restore the filter to full capacity after being rinsed in running water then air dried. All of K&N's replacement cabin air filters are also backed by a 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty: it's a three-level wining scenario, for the environment, the owner, and the SUV.
