Competitor Roger Kato had a .001 advantage at the starting line over Mitchell, but Mitchell’s Cavalier picked up the win with a near perfect 9.903 at 158.52 mph to Kato’s 9.910 at 160.92 mph.
Mitchell sailed through six rounds of eliminations in his 2003 Cavalier roadster. “I had a drag racers dream weekend and my car performed flawlessly,’ said Mitchell. “I was able to win Saturday and Sunday and finish in the quarter finals Sunday which gave me an additional 400 points.”
Mitchell hopes to win the 8 race series. “Out of six so far, I’ve had one win and two quarter final finishes,” he said. “It’s still really close and anyone’s game.”
The Los Angeles City firefighter is a second generation racer. “I grew up watching my dad in the NHRA on the west coast,” he said. “I have two kids now and maybe they’ll get into racing too.”
Mitchell’s Cavalier is a high powered street roadster built by Worthy Motorsports. “I’ve used K&N products for ten years,” he said. “K&N protects my engine and gives me additional performance on the track. I also put a K&N hood scoop on by Cavalier and noticed more power. It also helped with my visibility on the track. K&N is a tested and proven product.”
The next race in the 2009 Southern California Pro Gas Series will be at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California on October 24.
