IHRA Duck Tape Racing Team Sets I/CM World Record
- Mar 16, 2006
The 2006 IHRA Mr. Gasket Pro-Am Tour is underway and Duck Tape Racing is working
on the championship chase.
Racer Michael Beard uses a K&N oil filter and K&N air cleaner on the teams I/CM (I crate motor class) 1980 Stock Eliminator Volare. “The tracks are dusty and we need K&N products to keep the dirt out of the engine,” said Beard. “They work great.”
Beard wrote in an e-mail, “The Rockingham, North Carolina event is in the books. In preparation for the new season, Sloan Racing Engines built a new 360 Magnum crate motor for the Volare. We tested the new combination first at the RaceWorks.com Spring Blast where over 3500 spectators and 400 racers enjoyed excellent conditions, until the rain came. On the car’s maiden voyage, it ran a 7.08 in the 1/8 mile. Testing continued at Piedmont Dragway in Greensboro, North Carolina, we netted a best of 6.99 at 97 mph in the 1/8 mile, well below the current I/CM class World Record of a 7.15.”
To get from race to race Duck Tape Racing uses K&N Fuel Injection Performance Kits (FIPK) and K&N Performance Oil Filters (HP-3002) on its tow vehicles. “We pick up tow power on our 1997 C3500 Chevy Dually because of the K&N filter,” said Beard.
“Rockingham, North Carolina opened its gates to 384 race teams for the Mr. Gasket Pro-Am Tour the first weekend in March. The Volare began its record hunt with a 7.05 right off the trailer. In order to officially claim a World Record, the run must be backed up with a second run within 1% (a 7.12 in this case),” Beard wrote. “Driver error led to an off-pace 7.144 on the back-up run, but because it was still quicker than the record, the 7.05 provided the back-up for a slower run. We now hold the I/CM World Record at 7.144. The record also gives us 5 bonus points in the championship chase.”
Michael Beard also runs his 2000 Dakota Quad Cab 4.7L in Bracket Racing during the season. “I picked up 0.2 seconds in the quarter mile,” said Beard. “With the K&N FIPK (57-1516KP) gas mileage improved, we picked up ½ mile on the gallon and the Dakota’s performance was better overall.”
Duck Tape Racing hopes to do well at the Piedmont Dragway 1/8 mile IHRA Dragstrip near Julian, North Carolina, said Beard.
“K&N filters are compact and easy to maneuver,” said Beard. “The K&N products are well built and easy to install. We use K&N oil filters on all our team vehicles.”
