The Alhambra Unified School District, just east of Los Angeles, California, has produced some notable movers and shakers in the automotive industry. Racing icon Mickey Thompson was a graduate from Alhambra High School. Mike Spagnola, founder of Street Scene Equipment, and now VP of OEM and Product Development Programs at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), is a graduate of San Gabriel High School. Additionally, National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Sport Compact Racing pioneer Lisa Kubo graduated from Mark Keppel High School. Each year the Alhambra Unified School District teachers and school administrators recognize the top current automotive students for their outstanding accomplishments with the Alhambra USD Automotive Technicians Awards Night.

K&N Air Filters honors the very best automotive students by sponsoring the Outstanding Student Award, which is the highest level of recognition within the Alhambra automotive program. The student recipients, one from each of Alhambra’s three high schools, are selected by their instructors based upon their technical expertise, passion for the automotive industry, and their desire to continue their automotive education. In addition to their name being added to a perpetual trophy, the student receives a Certificate of Recognition from the State of California, and a $500 scholarship from K&N filters.
