K&N NHRA Drag Racer Michelle Furr Heads To zMax Dragway With High Hopes Of 3 Wins
- Sep 17, 2015
Michelle Furr got a first-hand taste of the excitement that comes with fast cars and screaming engines at the age of 15, when her dad sat down beside her and explained how to do a burnout. The young teenager was immediately "bitten by the bug," and 30-years later she is still drag racing. "My dad was a very good local bracket racer, who never went beyond the IHRA bracket finals," explained Furr. "But I knew, when I was a little girl, I wanted to win a Wally. I only started running NHRA a couple of years ago and am thrilled that we have earned several Wallies in that short time. I feel I have found my place."
Michelle Furr, who hails from Galax, Virginia, is already quite excited to return to zMax Dragway just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina where she has made quite a splash in the history books. “A lot of people refer to zMax as ‘our house’ with the kids and I each having a lot of wins there,” said Furr. Michelle’s first Super Comp Nationals win at zMax Dragway came in 2011, when she also became only the second female driver in NHRA history to go to two finals at the same event. Furr returned to zMax Dragway in 2012 to defend her Super Comp crown. In an all-female Super Comp final, Michelle Furr lined up against Lauren Freer.
The final against Lauren Freer was over as quickly as it began. Freer jumped the gun and tripped the red light. The 3rd Annual NHRA 4-Wide Nationals Super Comp win was again awarded to K&N's Michelle Furr. "I actually did a fist-pump when the car was on the stop," she laughed when explaining her reaction to seeing her win light. "I thought, do I want to just lift and roll down or, you know I always think when watching a race that that kind of thing is always disappointing, so I decided to go down there and see if I could hit another ninety." So with much excitement the Furr family once again prepares for the NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. This past June Michelle Furr made it to the final round of the Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway. Unfortunately weather forced track officials to cancel the finals at Bristol with the intention of making it up at zMax Dragway. An optimistic Furr said, “I've been in 3 National event finals at Charlotte, and now after it looked like I might get a national win at Bristol in June, the "Bristol" final will actually be finished at Charlotte.”
Considering how much luck Michelle has had at zMax Dragway in the past, she could potentially walk away from the NHRA Carolina Nationals with three wins, in two classes, and two different cars. Michelle Furr is obviously elated with the chance at taking home three more Wallies. However, she is also aware that great driving skills are but one of the elements of constant success. That in mind, she and her crew are strong proponents of proper maintenance and depend upon K&N products to fulfill their filtering needs. "My husband, Rick, has caught so many small issues with normal maintenance, and in turn, has saved so much in cost and downtime," she ensured. "It's a must for our team.” “We use K&N filters exclusively - on everything from our hot rods to our personal cars. If they make it, we use it. We've used K&N products from the beginning, with the utmost confidence in getting the best possible performance," Furr stated. "I have been blessed to be partnered with the best in the business, the companies like K&N that produce the products that will get the job done, give us peace of mind in performance and make my job on the track look easy. The K&N scoop on our dragster not only helps us pick up a few miles-per-hour, but it sure looks good in the winner's circle!"
