Lifetime Performance K&N Air Filter for 2012-2016 Harley-Davidson® Sportster® Seventy-Two®
- Jul 31, 2014
Harley-Davidson® introduced its newest factory custom Sportster® in 2012 to a mix of opinions from the general public and motorcycle industry professionals. The Sportster® XL1200V Seventy-Two® isn’t named after the year 1972, but Highway 72. California Route 72, also known as Whittier Boulevard near Los Angeles, California, was a popular cruising area in the 1960’s and ‘70’s. The controversy has nothing to do with the Seventy-Two’s modernized fuel-injected Evolution V-Twin engine, or Harley’s legendary fit and finish. On the contrary, the styling of the Seventy-Two® is what has opinions split. The Harley-Davidson® XL1200V Seventy-Two® is equipped with mini-ape hanger handlebars, thin-whitewall tires, skinny 21” front wheel, a lot of chrome, and a deep metal-flake paint job reminiscent of custom motorcycles that would have cruised down California Highway 72 in its hey-day.
Love the Seventy-Two® or hate it, the Sportster® XL1200V is now in its third year of production. Another feature of the XL1200V Seventy-Two® that separates it from the rest of the Sportster® family is the nostalgic round chrome air cleaner. While the chrome air cleaner cover is a classic round shape, the air filter inside is anything but simple. To build a replacement air filter for the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Harley-Davidson XL1200V Seventy-Two® K&N engineers had to design precision molded nylon mounting plates. The molded top and bottom plates sandwich the famous K&N high-flow pleated cotton gauze filter media and form a solid mounting surface.
A K&N high-flow replacement air filter is different from stock in that K&N uses cotton gauze filter media woven to exacting specifications. Cotton, by nature, is more breathable than the paper or foam media used for most motorcycle air filters. Since an internal combustion engine is essentially an air pump, getting more air into your engine can increase performance, acceleration, and throttle response. Some might be worried that an increase in airflow comes at the expense of filtration efficiency and engine protection. To put minds at ease K&N performs filtration efficiency testing following the ISO 5011 protocol to guarantee that our air filters will provide high airflow without sacrificing engine protection. HD-1212 was shown to have a 99.07% overall filtration efficiency when tested with ISO coarse test dust. Calling this test dust coarse is almost preposterous, as 22% of the dust is rated at 10 microns or less. To provide perspective, a human blood cell is typically between 6 and 8 microns across. Perhaps more exciting than the increased performance that comes with a K&N high-flow replacement air filter is that they are also washable and reusable. The advantage of a washable air filter is that it will pay for itself over time. Part number HD-1212 can be washed and made like new using one of the K&N Recharger air filter service kits. Recharger kit 99-5000 includes 12 fluid ounces of air filter cleaner and a 6.5 ounce aerosol bottle of air filter oil for quick and easy application. Recharger kit 99-5050 differs in that it includes an 8 ounce squeeze bottle of K&N filter oil for a more precise application. Part number HD-1212 for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Harley-Davidson® Sportster® XL1200V Seventy-Two® models is backed by the industry leading K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty. This means that 2012-2016 Harley-Davidson® Sportster® XL1200V Seventy-Two® owners can enjoy a lifetime of increased performance, reusability, and longer air filter service intervals when using part number HD-1212. Washable air filter, number HD-1212, is designed provide a lifetime of increased performance without any need for modifications or tuning for the following motorcycles:
