Plymouth Volare and 1974 Duster Compete in IHRA Summit Pro-Am Tour
- Mar 16, 2009
The IHRA Summit Pro-Am Tour season opener kicked off in Immokalee, Florida. Racers participated in three separate events, including two Pro-Am races and the first competition in the Champion Systems Sportsman Nationals.
Michael Beard started out strong and was consistent. He made back-to-back semifinal appearances in the two Pro Am events. In the Sportsman National he qualified 2nd in Stock in his 1980 Plymouth Volare. It is powered by a Mopar 360 Magnum crate motor and weighs around 3600 lbs.

Rain blew out the second week of competition, but on the third week of the season Beard competed again at Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, North Carolina for a two day Spring Blast event. The second day of the Spring Blast event was rained out, along with the IHRA Division 9 Pro-Am event. Beard left his home in Pennsylvania and went back a week later for the next event, the TCI Twins Race in Rockingham. He drove his 1974 Duster and was eliminated in the fourth round.
“I use K&N’s air intake system 57-1516 on my 2000 Dakota Quad Cab with a 4.7 liter engine,” said Beard. “Going back and forth to all these events is expensive. We save gas and noticed improved performance on our tow vehicle. We also use K&N air and oil filters on all of our vehicles. You can’t beat K&N for reliability on and off the track.”
Beard’s next race will be the IHRA Division 9 Pro-Am Race at the Famington Dragway in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
