Todd Piper Wins K&N/Stinnett Automotive Super Comp Championship
- Dec 22, 2011
In addition to grabbing the 2011 Super Pro Track Championship at Heartland Park Topeka, second generation racer Todd Piper also added the 2011 K&N/Stinnett Automotive Super Comp Championship to his ever growing list of accolades. All this for only the young driver's fourth season competing in the class and his first in the ride he used to make it happen.
"This was the first year for the Super Class program at Heartland Park during the bracket races, which rotated Super Street one week, then Super Gas and next Super Comp," explained multi-time NHRA National Champion, Gary Stinnett of the new track program. "I believe that Super Comp ended up having six events. I sponsored the class and K&N sponsored the end of year point fund." "Todd Piper actually had a really great season," said Stinnett. "To win the Super Pro and the Super Comp championship along with Driver of the Year for Heartland Park, that's a lot to be proud of. Even on the final race day of the year, he won the Super Pro event. He really had a great day with everything that came together for him."
Piper started his driving career when he was eleven in the JR program and worked his way up to the full size car he is driving now, a 2003 dragster with a 572ci BBC for power and is more than pleased with his 2011 race season. "I can't complain about the season at all," said the new Super Pro and Super Comp Track Champ. "Before the final weekend at Topeka, I had already won three Super Pro races and it was great to win the last one of the year, too. The Super Comp program at the track was really fun." "I started off the Super Comp deal with a win and pretty much got lucky from there on," he joked. "I won the Super Comp track championship by only two points. It was a really tight one and it came down to the last race. I lost first round and the girl that was behind me in points won. All she had to do was win the next round, but she went out." "I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to the Super Comp points. At the moment I was so focused on the Super Pro standings, since I was leading," he admitted of that last race day in October. The newly crowned 2011 K&N/Stinnett Automotive Super Comp Champ cannot wait to put his prize to the test. "It is so very cool," he said of the K&N 100-8505 carbon fiber scoop that Stinnett presented to him after winning. "It's so light and the tray and K&N filter are all included. It's pretty darn slick." "We are excited that the Super Class program will return to Heartland Park as a part of their bracket races again next season," Stinnett added. "I'm happy to see that Todd was the first Super Comp Champ. He's been doing so very well over the last couple of seasons and really coming on strong." "I really appreciate what K&N and Gary, with Stinnett Automotive, did for the local racers this season," said Piper. "It really means a lot to us to have the support for our local programs and more to race for."
