Add Estimated 7+ Horsepower to Honda Civic SI with K&N Typhoon Air Intake

The sport-compact Honda Civic SI made its debut at the 2005 Specialty Equipment Marketers Association (SEMA) trade show in Las Vegas. The redesigned Coupe has a four cylinder engine and is one of the most fuel efficient cars on the market.

Honda has continuously placed a Civic Coupe in the automotive market since 1992, but the 2005 model can be tailored to the owner's style through aftermarket parts. K&N Engineering proudly displayed a highly modified 2006 at the LA Auto Show in January. K&N employees took a stock Honda and worked to build a show car, considered unique to K&N.

K&N has also released a new 69-Series Typhoon Air Intake (69-1014TS) for the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Honda Civic SI 2.0L L4, Coupe. K&N dynamometer tests show an estimated 7.01 horsepower gain @6950 RPM. "The power gain is exceptional for an engine this size," said K&N Project Technician Nestor Cabrera. "This type of gain is usually seen on a much larger engine with twice as many cylinders."

The 69-Series Typhoon Air Intake (69-1014TS) is designed for all new Honda Civic SI's equipped with Honda's high revving 2.0L inline 4 Cylinder with variable valve timing and lift with intelligence. "The Kit is designed with maximum air flow in mind and uses several unique to K&N components such as a high volume 5-inch flange, K&N High Flow Air Filter, radiused filter adapter, heat shield and CNC mandrel-bent aluminum tube," said Cabrera. "The mass air flow sensor is mounted directly on the intake tube for precision and accurate mass air flow sensor readings."

The cab forward Honda design created a few obstacles in the development of the K&N Typhoon Intake System. "To compensate for the tighter engine compartment the K&N Intake Tube was designed using very tight bends and was kept close to the engine," said Cabrera. "The heat shield was also bolted onto the intake tube. Since room was an issue we designed the Intake Kit (69-1014TS) to flow with all the other components in the engine compartment, keeping the bends very tight and designing a compact yet effective heat shield with provisions to attach the factory fresh air duct."

There is a specially designed filter (RU-5147) for this application, said Cabrera. Although it does not use any exotic material it was designed to meet the demands of the Civic SI's engine.

K&N's New Typhoon Intake Produces 6+ HP for Chevy Cobalt

A year after its 2005 debut the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt 2.2 liter four-cylinder is one for the fastest small cars on the market. The engine is a 16-valve Ecotec four with twin counter-rotating balance shafts and electronic throttle control.

K&N Engineering has released a new 69-Series Typhoon Air Intake (69-4515TS) for the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Chevrolet (Chevy) Cobalt 2.2 liter L4. K&N dynamometer test show a 6.6 horsepower gain @ 4750 RPM for this powder coated silver intake. "The power gain is exceptional for this engine," said K&N Project Technician Nestor Cabrera. "We used a slightly larger than average filter (RU-5147) for this car to ensure that the engine would get all the air that it needs."

This 69-Series Typhoon Air Intake (69-4515TS) uses the factory mass air flow sensor installed in the tube and a special radiused filter adapter with heat shield. "The radiused adapter helps provide smooth non-turbulent air flow into the intake tube," said Cabrera. "The heat shield isolates the filter from the engine compartment keeping the air around it cooler."

The design of this vehicle played a major role in the development of this 69-Series Kit. The throttle body placement required the development of a special 90 degree silicone hose with a very tight radius. "We designed this K&N Kit (69-4515TS) so the intake tube would follow the cars natural lines," said Cabrera. "It places the air filter in the location of the stock air box."

With all K&N 69-Series Typhoon Air Intakes there is a thorough development procedure which requires the use of multiple test vehicles. "We conducted a little more testing than usual on this particular Air Intake before reaching this design," Cabrera said. "We were however, able to locate vehicles easily for this project."

Kia Spectra Gains 7+ Horsepower with K&N's 69-Series Typhoon Air Intake System

The 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Spectra is based on the next generation Hyundai Elantra platform and is the larger of Kia's two compact cars. The Spectra's 2.0L 4-cylinder engine is also the same engine as the Elantra. In 2005, the compact car was designed with a European appearance.

K&N Engineering has developed a new 69-Series Typhoon Air Intake (69-5305TP) for the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Kia Spectra 2.0L L4. "It is designed to be used with the factory mass air flow sensor along with a heat shield that keeps the filter isolated from the engine compartment," said K&N Project Technician Nestor Cabrera. "This keeps the engine cool for maximum horsepower and torque."

K&N dynamometer tests show a 7.17 horsepower gain @ 5800 RPM for this intake. "This kit (69-5305TP) has exceptional power gains for this type of engine," said Cabrera. "Kia NA provided us with some of the cars for testing. We actually applied information used in previous intake designs and applied it to this one. It resulted in a fairly smooth and non-troublesome intake design."

As with all other Typhoon systems, each Spectra kit begins with a high-flow K&N Replacement Filter (RU-4870). "We designed this Typhoon Air Intake (69-5305TP) so that the filter and the heat shield would be located where the original air box was," said Cabrera. "The filter uses a special radiused mounting flange to provide smooth non-turbulent air flow into the intake tube."

Typhoon Systems improve both engine performance and under the hood aesthetics. This K&N (69-5305TP) short-ram Intake System is available in polished aluminum.

Renezeder Sweeps CORR Lucas Oil Championship Off Road Racing Series in Chula Vista, CA

The first half of the 2006 season in the CORR Lucas Oil Championship Off Road Racing Series ended in Chula Vista, California with excitement and controversy.

An off-camber hairpin turn on a new track layout was the cause of many problems. Trucks were forced to slow down to nearly a stop in order to maneuver. Fans loved the close racing and lots of contact. Carl Renezeder Swept the Pro-2 Division and won one in Pro-4.

“Carl won rounds 7 and 8 by more than a straight-away Saturday and Sunday in triple digit temperatures against a full field of talent and great equipment,” said Jennifer Bissett of Team Renezeder. “But one of the best races of the season took place on Sunday.”

The Laguna Beach, Calfornia racer was flagged for aggressive driving, but he left the pits in time to fall back into the race. During the last few laps Adrian Cenni, Scott Douglas, Rick Huseman and Carl Renezeder were in a tight race for the lead. In the final lap, Renezeder made a controversial move by passing Scott Douglas, giving Adrian Cenni the opportunity to also pass Douglas.

The Race Review Board reviewed the pass and allowed Renezeder to keep his first place win. “He was also penalized by 10 points because of Carl’s side-by-side contact with Scott Douglas earlier in the race,” said Bissett. “Fans loved the close racing and the daring outside/inside move that Carl used in the chicane on the final lap. Cheering definitely outweighed the jeering in the stands.”

“I felt that Douglas missed his line and opened the door for me to capitalize,” said Renezeder after four hours of official deliberation. “There was incidental side-by-side contact, I hit the brakes, dove inside, made the pass, was tagged in the rear and then throttled up through the final corner to win. Hard-fought battles on the track make this sport fun for the drivers and the fans. I’m proud of my guys for the truck they gave me and feel bad for them that there was even an issue.”

“Team Renezeder’s new Lucas Oil Nissan Titan is officially on the map as a serious contender,” said Bissett. “Carl uses K&N Engineering products. We’ve been using K&N since Carl started his own team 8 years ago. Carl loves the performance he gets because of K&N and would not use any other filter. In the dust and sweltering heat K&N stops the dirt and debris from getting into the engine. We’ve never had a problem on these trucks anytime or anywhere with K&N Filters.”

The series takes a two week break before revving back up at Bark River, Michigan for rounds 9 and 10 on August 11th and 12th.

FASTRAK Racer Gets Back on Track

The Chris Steele Racing Team is very happy with a top 3 finish in a special local race at the I-77 Speedway near Richburg, South Carolina.

Steele said they have been struggling a bit, but this win may be a turning point for the team. He hopes to be back on track, especially when it comes to the FASTRAK Racing Series.

During practice, Steele was not happy with his 2004 GRT and made some changes before qualifying 6th. Still not satisfied with the way his car was handling, the team made some more changes. "It's been a tough season," said Steele before the track called for a final practice session. "If my car performed as well as my K&N Filter, we would win."

Steele started the main race from the third row on the outside and quickly moved into 5th position and then up to 4th. There was a pile-up on one of the restarts and Steele moved to 3rd position. He began to press for second, but could not make the move and had to settle on third. “I feel like we won the race,” said Steele. “Now that we’re back where we need to be it’s time to win some races again.”

Steele said his car is equipped with K&N Engineering Oil and Air Filters. “The K&N Filter works great and gave us an edge over our competitors,” said Steele. “The only filters I will use are K&N Filters.”
