K&N Washable and Reusable Cabin Air Filter for 2013-2017 Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S

The K&N VF1013 Cabin Air Filter is designed for some Subaru BRZs,Scion FR-Ss and Honda Fits.

The K&N VF1013 cabin air filter fits certain models of Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, and Honda Fit

Although air pollution became a major international environmental issue in the 1960s, the first air filter designed to block contaminants from entering the cabin of an automobile was not created until the 1980s. Today, more than 80 percent of new cars have a cabin or air conditioning filter.

K&N is offering the VF1013 cabin air filter for 2013 through 2017 Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S cars as well as 2007 through 2008 Honda Fits.

The Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S are part of the Toyota 86 Series that was developed in a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru, but is solely manufactured by Subaru. Introduced in January 2012, the rear wheel drive, front engine 2-door sports coupe includes a 2.0-liter 4U-GSE/FA20 H4 naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine that features Toyota’s D-4S injection system that uses direct and port fuel injection. Power output has been rated at 200-horsepower (149 kW; 203 PS) at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft (205 N-m) of torque at 6,000 rpm. Two 6-speed transmissions are available –- an in-house developed Toyota TL70 manual gearbox and an Aisin-Warner A960E, which is a modified version of the transmission used on the Lexus IS 250. The automatic transmission includes software that has been engineered to make it imitate the response of a dual-clutch gearbox. This transmission has three different modes –- Sport, Snow, and Normal. A torque sensing limited slip differential is standard.

Introduced in 2001, the Honda Fit is a five-door, front engine, front-wheel drive subcompact car that is sold Japan, Europe, China, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Chile, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines (as the Honda Jazz).

K&N offers the VF1013 cabin air filter for the 2013 through 2017 Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S and the 2007 through 2008 Honda Fit. The cabin air filter is electrostatically charged to catch and hold most mold, mildew, pollen, spores, fungus and germs. It is washable and reusable and covered by a K&N 10 Year/100,000 Mile Limited Warranty.

K&N also offers the 99-6000 cabin filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to clean and refresh all K&N cabin air filters. The cleaner removes dirt and road grime as well as the trapped mold, mildew, fungus, allergens, bacteria and other unhealthy debris and increases the electrostatic properties of the filter so that it can be reused.

The filter features a fan-folded, single layer of thermally bonded nonwoven synthetic material with wire screening held in a molded urethane frame. As air flows through the K&N cabin air filter, dirt and allergen particles are caught in the synthetic fibers and held by the electrostatic charge. The design assures increased airflow, even as the filter gets dirty.

K&N cabin air filters outperform factory cabin filters because the factory filter uses folded paper or some combination of paper and fibers. Often rectangular or nearly square in shape, the factory filter serves only as a physical barrier to capture the unhealthy contaminants and only reduces the number of particles that gets into the car’s ventilation and air conditioning system. The contaminants that the factory filter does catch and hold accumulates on the surface and ultimately cakes up, forming a layer of filth that restricts the flow of air coming into the cabin. These filters are not designed to be washed and must be discarded after they capture such an overabundance of contaminants, they can no longer perform as a filter. Factory cabin air filters generally need to be replaced at least once a year. However, since the K&N cabin air filters can be cleaned and recharged, they can be reused so they will last for as long as you own your car.

The K&N VF1013 cabin air filter has been designed and engineered to fit into the following vehicles:

Steve Iacona’s Phoenix is a Custom Harley® that Honors a Hero

Iacona Customs Phoenix at the New York IMS

The hand-built Phoenix is a powerful tribute bike

Sometimes a custom motorcycle’s significance runs deeper than the sum of its parts. Such is the case with Iacona Customs’ stellar Harley-Davidson® which is aptly named Phoenix. The mechanical core of the build is an early 1992 Sportster, but the bike’s soul rests solidly in what it symbolizes.

“This bike was built as a tribute to a New York City fire fighter who we lost on 9/11,” says Steve Iacona. “This Sportster has a long history between the new owner and the NYC FDNY. With this build, his memory will live on.” Clearly, it’s fitting that this beautiful tribute bike was built in Iacona’s Brooklyn-based shop.

Phoenix rode away with the top spot in the Modified Harley Class in J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Bike Show in New York. K&N is a sponsor of the Mod Harley Class, as well as two other classes at each stop of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show.

The narrow tail section accentuates the beefy rear tire

The moto-artists at Iacona Customs are known for building unique, one-off, and award winning bikes with basic hand tools. The Phoenix build is no exception. “The entire bike was hand built, so each part was either modified or handmade,” says Iacona.

“Some of the main features are the front mounted oil tank with stainless lines instead of rubber hoses, custom made gas tank, front fairing assembly, and our original Iacona Custom Cycles tail section with integrated shock.” That ultra-narrow and highly stylized tail section is like none other in the custom bike world, and the front fairing with its offset headlight is a masterpiece.

The offset headlight is becoming a style trademark of Iacona Customs

In addition to the hand crafted body elements, the exhaust is a unique mix of a semi-straight pipe emanating from the front cylinder and a serpentine wrap around the rear cylinder pipe. The pipes exit aggressively on both sides of the fat rear tire. Of course, the parts are all handmade.

Steve Iacona is no stranger to the winner’s podium of national motorcycle shows. “I started building cars out of my garage, and eventually transitioned into motorcycles,” says Iacona. “After building a few bikes, word of mouth spread. Today we have two 1st place United States Championship titles and one 2nd place World Championship title. Hopefully soon we will have our 3rd U.S. title!”

The hand-crafted bodywork and paint job on the build is top-notch

Iacona has big plans for the future of Iacona Customs. “We’ve established ourselves as Harley builders, but next year we are going to take it to the next level,” says Iconia. “Builders are builders, so we will be working on different bikes such as BMWs and maybe even Yamahas.”

“Our next endeavor will be producing our own product line. The first product will be our custom ignition switch, which you can see on our latest builds,” Iacona continues. “We also wouldn’t mind building bikes for some famous celebrities.”

K&N congratulates Iacona Customs on a spectacular and important build. Visit the Iacona Custom Cycles website for more information on their custom projects.

Yoshimura Suzuki’s Toni Elias Completes an Impressive 2016 Superbike Racing Season

Suzuki Yoshimura Racing team

Elias (on bike 24) will join Hayden on team Yoshimura again in 2017

Toni Elias will undoubtedly remember 2016 as a very good year. At the age of 33, the veteran road racer experienced a career rejuvenation of substantial proportions.

The former MotoGP Moto2 World Champion seemingly had no racing opportunities heading into 2016 when he was contacted to do some limited testing for K&N-sponsored Yoshimura Suzuki. As it turned out, Elias surprised everyone, including himself, with his speed on the Yoshi Suzuki GSX-R1000. He was signed to race in place of Jake Lewis who was injured prior to the season, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Elias garnered six first-place finishes in the 2016 MotoAmerica Superbike season, and secured an impressive third place finish in the overall standings. He finished a single point out of second place and just 7 points out of first. Clearly, American Superbike racing suits the Spanish rider. Elias was amazingly quick in adapting his frenetic riding style to the Superbike class.

Elias tweaked his riding style to find success in the Superbike class

Not surprisingly, Yoshimura Suzuki enthusiastically pursued Elias’ return for the 2017 season. When MotoAmarica resumes in March with the official testing for the series, Elias will be piloting one of the totally redesigned GSX-R1000s alongside teammate Roger Hayden. “We are very happy to have both Roger and Toni back with Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing,” said Pat Alexander, Suzuki Motor of America Race Support Manager.

Senior Vice President for Yoshimura Research and Development of America, Don Sakakura echoed Alexander’s enthusiasm on the makeup of the team. “After a very competitive season last year, we are excited to have these two great talents back for another year of racing,” said Sakakura. “Roger and Toni made great progress with the team last year, and we are hopeful that the new GSX-R1000 will prove to be a winning combination for them in 2017.”

You would think a top three finish in his rookie season in MotoAmerica Superbike would be the end of the 2016 story for Elias. That is hardly the case. Elias traded his GSX-R road racer for a flat track bike to compete in the 4th invitational Superprestigio in Barcelona, Spain in December. Again showing his acute ability to adapt to different racing styles, Elias charged to an impressive second place in the competition while rubbing elbows with some of the biggest names in racing.

K&N is excited to again be a part of the continued resurgence of Yoshimura Suzuki. Toni Elias is certainly going to be a huge part of what looks to be an exciting time in MotoAmerica Superbike with the partnership of Yoshimura Suzuki and K&N Engineering.

Spring's Around The Corner - Time for a K&N Filter in your Lawn Mower or Chainsaw

The construction of K&N filters provides additonal capacity versus paper filters

K&N small engine filters have a greater capacity to hold dirt while maintaining airflow

Most enthusiasts are well-aware that K&N produces replacement filters and high-performance intake kits for cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles. But most miss the fact that K&N also manufacturers filters for walk-behind and riding mowers, and chainsaws, along with other power equipment.

So why are we talking about lawn mower and chainsaw filters when there’s 10 feet of snow on the ground in parts of the country? Because before you know it the days will get longer and warmer, and the grass will begin to sprout. And we want you to be ready. Also, what better time to work on your tools in the garage?

Unlike modern cars and trucks, lawn mowers and chainsaws don’t have any emissions controls. You may be surprised to learn that a lawn mower produces as much pollution as five modern cars, used for the same amount of time. And that’s a mower that’s running properly.

One of the largest causes of additional air pollution emanating from lawn mowers and chainsaws is a clogged air filter. If the engine isn’t able to draw enough air, it will run rich (i.e. too much fuel and not enough air for complete combustion) so unburned hydrocarbons are released through the exhaust.

K&N manufactures replacement filters for most small landscaping and industrial engines

K&N makes filters for riding and walk-behind mowers, chain saws, edgers, blowers, and more

And beyond any damage to the environment, it impacts your wallet as well. An engine that’s running continually rich is an engine that’s headed toward failure. And if the damage is severe enough, the expense to repair could easily exceed the value of the mower. This year around 10 million walk-behind and riding mowers will be purchased in the United States. While there’s no data available to indicate how many mowers are discarded each year because of failures related to poor engine maintenance, you could assume that they’re being replaced by a fair percentage of those new 10 million mowers.

The solution is simple: install a K&N air filter on your mower or chainsaw. K&N filters have a greater capacity to capture dirt and dust yet maintain airflow. Also, once you’ve purchased a K&N air filter it means you no longer have to remember to stop at the hardware or “big box” home store to pick-up a new filter each year. You simply wash and reuse!

K&N air filters for mowers and chainsaw are constructed with the company’s hybrid air filtration medium, which is a non-woven synthetic material and is incredibly easy to clean. Designed to be used dry with no oil required, the filters don’t even have to be completely dry before re-installation. Just spray on the 99-0624 synthetic air filter cleaner and clean the dirt, dust, clippings, and other contaminants with just a garden hose.

K&N Filters are reusable, so they need to be purchased just once. Just wash each year.

No need to have to remember to buy a new filter each year with a K&N reuseable filter

K&N also manufactures many direct replacement filter elements designed for small industrial engines, compressors, generators, snow blowers, utility lawn and garden units such as edgers and blowers, industrial polishers, and other auxiliary power units (APUs), with engines manufactured by Briggs & Stratton, Tecumseh, Honda, John Deere, Kawasaki, Kohler, Onan, and others. Some of the most popular filter applications are K&N Filter 33-2238 that fits many Honda engines from 4HP to 6.5HP and many Briggs and Stratton engines from 3.5HP to 6HP. Most Stihl chain saws are covered by three K&N Filter part numbers E-4250, E-4310, and E-4690. K&N also offers air filters for Bolens, John Deere, Kohler, Tecumseh and others.

In addition to the mower and chainsaw filters above, K&N’s automotive performance line includes air filter wraps, clamp-on air filters, crankcase vent filters, plenums, carb adapters, K&N Stubstacks®, carbon fiber composites, filter accessories, air/fuel monitors, inline fuel filters and pumps, diesel fuel filters and air restriction gauges. K&N also offers a wide variety of performance parts for motorcycles, personal watercraft, and boats. To locate K&N upgrades for cars, SUVs, vans, commercial trucks, karts, scooters, motorcycles, campervans, or almost anything with an engine, use the K&N search by vehicle tool.

A Candid Q&A with American Flat Track Star Brad Baker

K&N-sponsored Brad Baker gearing up for strong 2017 season

Brad Baker has reason to smile with an exciting new race team for 2017

Exciting changes are coming in 2017 for American Pro Flat Track racing and for one of the stars of the series, Brad Baker. The former AMA Pro Single National Champion and two-time European Superprestigio winner is primed for a run at reclaiming the number 1 plate in the 2017 racing season.

In this candid Q&A, the K&N-sponsored racer gives us some great insights into what the new flat track series will look like for both racers and fans. Baker also gives us a look back at his 2016 racing season and his exciting racing team news for 2017.

K&N: What are a few highlights of your 2016 flat track season?

Brad Baker and Marquez in Superprestigio

Marquez got the upper hand in the 2016 Superprestigio, but Baker will fight again in 2017

Brad Baker: 2016 was another roller-coaster season of ups and downs. I started off the year a little behind as I separated my right shoulder at the Troy Bayliss Classic in Australia in January. I bounced back quickly though and still had a solid start to the American Flat Track series in Daytona with two top 5 finishes. That was just the beginning of the ride though.

The next national, I found myself watching from the sidelines after an engine failure when I was leading the main event in Austin, Texas. That would stay repetitive for the rest of the season. I would have one or two good races then have an engine failure while leading or in the top 3. However, even with the bad luck of engine failures, I still managed a few podiums and a second consecutive Summer X Games bronze medal. I also finished the AMA Pro season and my last race with the Harley Davidson Motor Company by winning the Santa Rosa Mile by 13 seconds.

Baker riding with Rossi

K&N: You went back to Europe to try to defend your Superprestigio title. Tell us a little about that experience.

BB: Yes, I ended the season with an amazing 5 week trip to Europe. I spent most of my time training with my good friend, Ferran Cardus. Ferran is the Spanish Dirt Track champion and will be competing at the American Flat Track season opener in Daytona in March aboard my 450 Hondas. One highlight of the trip was getting the honor and pleasure to ride with legend Valentino Rossi at his beautiful Motor Ranch in Tavullia, Italy. Vale and I have made plans for him to come ride with me in April between the Argentina and Austin GP.

Baker and K&N Harley Davidson

Baker will move from Harley to Indian in 2017

Next and most important on the schedule was the 4th edition of the Superprestigio Dirt Track Race in the incredible city of Barcelona, Spain. I was the favorite to win the Superfinal race but every year the riders train harder at dirt track, and teams get more serious about set up and preparation so the task would not be easy. Not to mention I'm competing against world class racers and athletes like 5-time MotoGP champ Marc Marquez. I gave it all I had this year but I missed the set up and tire choice this time and just wasn't able to match the pace. I brought home third place behind hometown hero Marquez and gentleman Toni Elias.

K&N: What are your feelings on the changes to Pro Flat Track that are coming next season?

BB: I have a really good feeling about the changes that have been made by AMA Pro (American Flat Track). I think the changes will benefit the sport which benefits riders and teams as well as the fans. For the fans, the flat track class structure has been confusing to understand for quite a few years. Unlike motocross and road racing, where classes have been separated by engine CC and bike size, flat track has been separated by a rider’s skill level riding the same bike. This is still a factor in other motorsports but it's much easier for a fan to distinguish the classes by the sound and look of a bike. Obviously, the more skilled riders compete on the bigger and higher horsepower machines. I'm positive the racing will still be close and fun to watch even on the smaller and more technical courses. For the riders and teams, the sport is now more marketable, which means more OEM brand involvement and outside sponsorship opportunities. Flat track has a lot positive momentum in growth behind it right now and I believe these changes in 2017 will add to that.

Brad Baker on Superprestigio podium

Baker looks to get back to the center of the podium in Barcelona

K&N: What is your relationship with K&N?

BB: I have had a great relationship with K&N for many years now. They are longtime supporters of the sport I love and it means a lot that they have believed in me for so long. I trust K&N because they have the best air and oil filters on the market when you are looking for performance and protection. I trust them whether it's in my race bikes or my pickup truck!

K&N: What are your thoughts on your upcoming 2017 season and what are your goals?

BB: I am really excited about the 2017 season! I am riding for Indian Motorcycle with an all new team behind me. The current Grand National Champion, Bryan Smith, will be my teammate and the man behind his success, Ricky Howerton, will be our Team Manager. With the already proven capability of the Indian Scout FTR 750 mixed with my talent and knowledge of my team, I think we are going to have a solid first year together. The goal is to win races, stay consistent on my bad days, and recover the #1 plate at the end of the year!

We would like to congratulate Brad Baker on a positive 2016 and we look forward to what is ahead in 2017.
