Panel Air Filters - The Next Wave In Custom Car and Truck Intakes

Panel filters can be installed inside the hood or beneath, with a tight seal to the engine intake

These panel filters are fed through a hood scoop tightly sealed by a rubber gasket

If you’re a car, truck, or motorcycle customizer or a race car builder, a panel air filter can be a valuable addition to your bag of tricks. Whether you have a particular demanding customer or you’re just looking to do something different, a panel air filter is incredibly versatile in that it can be mounted to any flat surface, opening up all sorts of possibilities of how to integrate the filter into your next project.

For example, we know of a builder who fabricated a hood-mounted intake with panel filters inserted into the underside of the hood (along with a fabricated fitting to direct the intake air to the inlet). With this arrangement, when the hood is open, all anyone sees is the engine. Furthermore, there’s no need to run an intake pipe across the engine bay to a large conical filter (or two), reducing the amount of clutter under the hood. So if your next build is looking for a super clean look under the hood, consider a panel filter as a means to reduce the underhood components.

A panel filter can also be utilized in a custom air box, whether on a race car or a show car. Mounted remotely near the fresh air source, a panel filter-equipped air box can flow sufficient fresh intake air while keeping the intake sound common to a conical filter to a minimum.

Panel filters offer a great deal of versatility in installation locations

Panel filters allow for a wide variety of placement options around the engine bay

Another application for a panel air filter is on a multiple inline cylinder motorcycle. The builder can provide the customer with a unique, custom solution with a one-off fabricated air box fed by a panel filter.

One panel we recommend for many of these and other applications is the K&N 33-5018. At an overall length of just shy of a foot (11.063 inches) and height of almost four inches (3.813 inches) it’s size allows a great deal of flexibility. Need more airflow? Use two K&N 33-5018 filters. Let your creativity be your guide. If this filter doesn't fit your needs, use the panel filter search by dimension tool.

K&N panel air filters are constructed of several layers of oiled cotton filter media, which offers less resistance to intake air than traditional paper filters. The multi-layered cotton material also filters out microparticles that could damage the engine. However, prior to any filter entering production, each design is evaluated in K&N’s own filtration testing lab. Testing adheres to ISO 5011 standards, ensuring that your K&N filter provides high airflow while maintaining engine protection.

K&N offers a panel filter part number 33-5018 suitable as for use in custom installations

Panel filter K&N part number 33-5018 is a great starting point for an installation

The only maintenance required of a panel filter can be done in no time at all. At intervals of 50,000 miles (depending upon your driving conditions) only the application of a K&N recharger kit to clean and refresh the panel air filter is needed, preparing it for another 50,000 miles of driving. A K&N panel air filter is designed to last for the lifetime of the vehicle, which K&N guarantees will perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without requiring replacement. Ben Davis' Honda CB750 Custom Conquers the Field at the DC International Motorcycle Show

Legion Cycle Works CB750 custom side view

Ben Davis has created a CB750 custom like no other

In the ranking of iconic Japanese motorcycles, the '70s era Honda CB750 has to be near the top. The classic inline-four has served as the basis for choppers, café racers, and even stylized baggers. However, Ben Davis of Legion Cycle Works has created a custom CB750 unlike any other. His build earned Davis an impressive win in the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show. He walked away with the trophy in the K&N-sponsored Modified Retro category at the Washington, D.C. stop of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show (IMS).

His “Xerxes” is a 1979 CB750 that Davis has morphed into an amalgamated custom that somehow works perfectly. The bike is the namesake of the powerful and vengeful Persian king of the late BC era who is central to much of that period’s world history (although now probably better known to most as a major character in the movie 300). Like the historical figure, Davis’ Xerxes looks ready to invade and conquer distant lands.

Legion Cycle Works CB750 custom triple-clamp

The artwork on the triple-clamp was done by Davis' friend at DC comics

When discussing his inspiration for the project, Davis may have uttered the greatest bike-builder quote ever. “My goal was to build something that looked like Mad Max and a Spartan had a baby, but the baby listens to heavy metal and eats caviar with its pinkie out,” he said. We have to say that Xerxes is a wonderfully outrageous love child!

Up front is probably the build’s most unique and polarizing feature. The hand-made fairing is reminiscent of an ancient warrior’s helmet and face shield. While completely unconventional, the fairing starts the aggressive, warlike motif in no uncertain terms.

Legion Cycle Works CB750 custom front view

The hand-made fairing is a focal point of Xerxes

That fairing is mounted to a Suzuki GSX-R1000 front end. The upper triple clamp secures those forks in true warrior style. Davis had a battlefield scene sketched on the aluminum part. With the low-set clip-on handlebars, the rider’s face is up close and personal with that hand-to-hand combat scene.

The suspension trickery doesn’t stop with the modern sport-bike forks. Davis crafted a very clean and sano mono-shock rear setup that is fabricated in a style much like the early Yamaha YZ rear end that really started the single shock era. The wonderfully minimalist framework accentuates the raw nature of the Xerxes build.

The aesthetic armor on this motorized warrior is the gloss black and deep candy red paintjob. That candy red finish took eight coats to get the depth that Davis wanted.

Legion Cycle Works CB750 custom engine

There is serious firepower in that inline-four

Of course, the heart of this build is the CB750 engine. Well, at least it was a 750 when it rolled off the Japanese assembly line. Davis has gone deep in his performance enhancement, boring the inline-four out to 836. It runs CB900 cams and breathes through Keihin CR29 race carbs. Every bit of that stunning engine is visible due to the under-frame headers feeding into a low-set, stubby conical exhaust can.

K&N is honored to be able to sponsor a custom builders’ competition that recognizes innovative projects like Ben Davis’ Xerxes. To protect your ride in the real world, find the perfect K&N filter in our online application search tool.

It starts with a 2016 Ford F-450 Super Duty chassis equipped with the powerful 6.7L Powerstroke V8 Turbo Diesel. But that’s just the beginning. This F-450 is definitely not your average pickup.

Here at K&N we like to approach the calendar with the most eye-catching vehicles in mind. In past calendar shoots, K&N has featured a 1967 Pontiac Bonneville, 599 and 498 Italia Ferraris, a 1951 Ford Shoebox, and even a 1932 Ford Roadster pickup, just to name a few. When we saw the custom Ford F-450 that US Specialty Vehicles had to offer, we knew this was a definite candidate.

US Specialty Vehicles is located in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and produces custom vehicles of the utmost quality. Their vehicles integrate traditional SUV aesthetics with proprietary designs and technological innovations creating truly exceptional products for their customers. USSV’s claim to fame is “creating awe-inspiring vehicles for those who want to stand out from the crowd. A perfect meeting of heavy-duty, rugged exterior and lush, luxurious interior.”

It comes with a Securilock passive anti-theft system to keep the thieves at bay and even 2nd row independent 8-way power seats! One of our favorites is the leather wrapped dash and steering, along with the doors that accompany storage and accent lights. The interior is leather wrapped with dark wood and silver accents. It has a 5-speed automatic transmission and of course is four-wheel drive. The F-450 features power assist steering, and has two front solid twin-coil monobeams w/1.38” shock absorbers. It has a back smart hydraulic suspension system, carried by 20x10-inch aluminum custom wheels wrapped in 38-inch Toyo Open Country M/T tires with a heavy duty spare tire carrier to ensure a trip home from the trail.

We mentioned the power, safety, and technical knick knacks, but what about luxury? This F-450 has it too. It comes with premium leather luxury power seats with heat control and foot rests, to keep you kicked back and comfortable while enjoying the beautiful view outside the custom applied sunroof USSV has fabricated. Or if that’s not your style put the partition up if want watch some football on the 40” TV while chatting with the driver on the intercom system. What doesn’t this SUV have?

Looking forward to the off season, Carl said, “We try to learn from every race, and use that knowledge to continue to make the trucks faster and better. I have the best team who, together with my sponsors, are constantly refining the trucks to give us the winning edge. Since we finished the year out like we did, we know we were on the right track with the trucks so we will be working on perfecting the trucks so we can win more races next year. My sponsors, fans, family and my team motivate me to keep winning, and I couldn't do what I do without them.”

Carl is also looking forward to the off season to spend some extra time with his family and enjoy the little down time. So keep your eye on Carl and his team to come out focused and prepared for the 2017 season, and looking to start out strong and continue that all the way through the season.

Ray Cook Ends 2016 on a High Note with Victory in 'Hangover' 40-Lap Feature

K&N driver Ray Cook capped 2016 with a win in the 40-lap "Hangover" race New Year'

Ray Cook took the lead of the 'Hangover' on Lap 15 then cruised to the win at 411 Motor Speedway

K&N-sponsored driver Ray Cook capped his 2016 season with a win in the December 31st “Hangover” Super Late Model race on 411 Motor Speedway’s 3/8-mile oval in Seymour, Tennessee. The win, the “Tarheel Tiger’s” third of 2016, required a gutsy performance to beat Donald McIntosh, who had lately been on a hot streak.

Cook’s second spot in his group’s qualifying put him second in the outside row, fourth overall for the 40-lap main event. After jumping to third on the start, Cook went backward again to fourth while trying to take second. After a bit of work, he found a clear path to the leader, McIntosh, who had sprinted away with the others behind fighting for second.

“By about lap 7 or 8, the leader had about a straightaway lead,” Cook said. “The car had been flawless all day and I knew I just had to be patient.”

Veteran racer Ray Cook knows how to ring in the New Year, picking up a $4,000 win in the Hangover.

Ray Cook's win gave him a $4,000 payday, a pretty nice way to ring in the New Year

Foot by foot, Cook reeled in McIntosh until he overtook the race leader on lap 15 with an outside move. The veteran oval driver, Cook, held onto first place for the remaining 25 laps, including a late-race restart after McIntosh’s car retired to bring out a caution. The win was good for $4,000 payday, not a bad way to ring in the New Year.

“It’s huge,” Cook said. “You’re only as good as your last race. Since we won’t race until January 28, it gives us a nice period to enjoy the win.”

The win came with his Capital Race Cars Super Late Model chassis and using and older, though obviously still strong, 427-based V8 from South Carolina’s Kenny Lamb Racing Engines. That engine breathes through a K&N air cleaner on the carburetor and also uses K&N oil filers on the dry sump system.

Ray has been a K&N driver for more than 20 years. “We’ve been using K&N my whole career,” he said. “We’ve had great success with them and never had a single issue with any of their parts.”

"The car had been flawless all day," said Ray Cook of his Hangover-winning Super Late Mode

Ray Cook has run K&N products in his cars for his whole career

The Hangover win is especially sweet for Cook after he ran a relatively abbreviated schedule in 2016. He cut back from his usual 65 to 70 annual races to only run 30 in 2016 while also promoting three series (Schaeffer’s Southern National Series, Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals, and Schaeffer’s Southern Nationsl Bonus Series) and races at Tri-County Racetrack in his hometown of Brasstown, North Carolina.

He expects a similar schedule in 2017, though he’s looking forward to his first race of the year, the Cabin Fever 40 at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia. Cook won that race in 2009 and finished a strong third last year, so he looks to carry his Hangover victory into a great start to 2017.
