K&N Filters-backed teams Prodrive Racing Australia and Audi Sport Customer Racing claimed spots on the top step on the podium at one of the most prestigious events run in the country on the weekend, the Australian Grand Prix.

The Australian Grand Prix is the opening round of the Formula One Championship each year, with F1 supported by the marquee local race classes, Supercars and Australian GT.

Racing the Supercheap Auto Racing Ford Falcon in Supercars, Chaz Mostert ended his weekend with a win in the final of the four sprint races over the weekend, cementing third in points for the weekend.

While no Supercars title points are on offer at the Australian Grand Prix, it is always a fierce battle at the Albert Park circuit and a chance for Prodrive Racing Australia to develop their Falcons for the second round of the championship in a few weeks.

“This weekend is all about building momentum and making our cars better and better,” Mostert said.

“I’m really happy with how we ended up. The crew and my engineer Adam De Borre all did an awesome job to get the car together and working like it did.”

With the championship heading to the tight Symmons Plains track in Tasmania for round two of the title, Mostert knows there is still hard work ahead for Prodrive and his Supercheap Auto Racing crew and admits his #55 Falcon still has some weaknesses.

“To get the race win and then third for the weekend is awesome. There are still a few little things that we need to work on but I feel like we have a good direction for the next few events.”

In Australian GT, Audi Sport Racing Australia kicked off the weekend in perfect style – announcing K&N Filters as its newest partner and locking out the first three spots in qualifying.

The team remained the benchmark for the remainder of the weekend, with a 1-2-3 in the weekend’s opening race, a victory in race three and an overall round victory for #73 Valvoline Audi R8 LMS of Kelvin van der Linde and Geoff Emery.

"Kelvin did an awesome job this weekend," Emery said.

"Really it was just up to me to keep it on the black stuff and bring it home! It was a great weekend!"

The Supercars Championship resumes in a week and a half’s time for round two of the title at Symmons Plains in Tasmania.

Our Australian GT team on the other hand has a few weeks off before heading to the opposite side of the country to compete at Barbagallo Raceway, outside of Perth, Western Australia for the third round of the title.

Audi Sport Australia Moves to K&N to Improve Response, Performance of R8 LMS GT3

Both engineers and drivers agreed K&N air filters imroved the Audi's performance

The official Audi Sport Customer Racing program for the Australian GT championship has selected K&N Filters to equip its team of up to seven Audi R8 LMS race cars based on the California company’s reputation for quality, reliability, and performance.

Audi Sport Customer Racing Australia, operating out of the Melbourne Performance Centre, runs the GT3-spec Audis in the Australian GT as one of only a few customer sports programs for the marque outside of Europe, and also supports more than 20 Audis being raced across Australia and New Zealand.

Powered by an all-aluminum DOHC 5.2L V10 engine, the Audi R8 LMS GT race car puts out up to 553 horsepower and boasts 369 lb-ft of torque. Similar R8 LMS GT race cars brought Audi the GT Daytona Manufacturer’s Championship in 2016, beating Ferrari and Porsche.

GT Racing in Australia has taken off in recent years, with three separate championships taking place in 2017, the Australian GT Championship for sprint races, the Australian Endurance Championship for longer races with driver changes, and the GT Trophy series, shorter races for older spec cars. The shortest GT race runs for just 25 minutes, while the marquee endurance event in Australia is the punishing Bathurst 12 Hour at the four-mile Mount Panorama Circuit west of Sydney.

Todd Gilliland Wins K&N Pro Series West Race at Kern County

Todd Gilliland won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Kern County Raceway Park.

Todd Gilliland won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Kern County Raceway Park in California for the second year in a row and moved into first place in the West Series standings. He was followed by a pair of K&N Pro Series West rookies, including his teammate at Bill McAnally Racing.

Bill McAnally Racing drivers finished 1-2 for the second K&N Pro Series West race in a row. Gilliland, who won the eighth K&N Pro Series race of his career, won the pole and took the lead at Kern County Raceway Park on lap 95 of the NAPA Auto Parts 150. The race was extended six laps and had a green-white-checkered flag finish.

Gilliland, the reigning K&N Pro Series West champion, said Kern County Raceway Park fits his racing style.

“It’s fast. It’s pretty big and it’s really racy,” Gilliland said. “I really enjoy all those things. I feel it’s probably one of the best race tracks we go to.”

Gilliland led the first 10 laps of the race. Michael Self passed Gilliland for the lead on lap 11 and held it for 84 laps. Self led the most laps in the race. But on lap 95, Gilliland regained the lead and was out front for the final 62 laps. He led for 72 laps in the race.

“We were just trying to save our tires as much as we could,” Gilliland said. “It felt like I was going way too hard. We ended up getting by him there and it all worked out. Usually it doesn’t work out that easy or the way you want it to.”

Derek Knaus, a 15-year-old rookie, was second. He started the race in sixth and moved his way up throughout the race.

“The beginning of the race it was a little crazy,” Knaus said. “Todd was kind of lifting a little earlier than what I expected. I thought he was crazy, but then on the long run, that’s what helped him. He saved way more than I did. He had a little more turn in the car. He was just a little more freer off.”

In the first K&N Pro Series West race of the season at Tucson Speedway, Bill McAnally Racing teammates Chris Eggleston and Gilliland were first and second. Eggleston won the season opener in Tucson. It was the first top-five K&N Pro Series West finish for Knaus.

“That’s the main thing. We’re teammates,” Knaus said. “We got to race each other clean.”

Will Rodgers, another K&N Pro Series West rookie, was third. He was fifth in the race at Tucson Speedway.

“I think we actually had the car that could go to the front,” Rodgers said. “If I had just a little bit more experience, it’s my first time at the race track, so I’m still kind of learning the whole thing, the way it flows, where the fast line is at the end of the night on old tires. This thing could definitely take this win. But for our first time, we are very happy how it panned out.”

Eggleston, a 10-time winner in the K&N Pro Series West, finished fourth and David Mayhew was fifth.

Gilliland has a two-point lead over Eggleston in the K&N Pro Series West standings after two races.

“It feels great,” Gilliland said. “That’s something we built on last year from winning the first three West races. That’s something I feel like we have now and we will keep digging.”

The next race in the K&N Pro Series West is the NAPA Auto Parts Twin 100s at Irwindale Speedway in California.

Chad Wienen Wins the Daytona ATV SX for Second Year in a Row at Daytona Bike Week

No one can accuse Chad Wienen of being a slow starter. The K&N-sponsored racer claimed the top podium spot in the season opener of ATV Supercross (ATV SX) for the second consecutive year. The 2017 edition of the AMA ATV Pro National series kicked off at Daytona Bike Week.

Wienen, the star of the Wienen Motorsports team, started his season by grabbing the ATVRiders.com Fastest Qualifier Award at the famed Daytona International Speedway.

"The day started off a little wet from the rains we received on Monday," said Wienan. “We didn't participate in the first time qualifying session, and the second one had much better conditions to go grab the top qualifying spot later on in the session on my Wienen Motorsports Yamaha."

The K&N-sponsored ATV star had to do some serious work to fight back from a mediocre start in his first heat race when he came out of the first turn in the sixth position. With only six laps in the heat race, a hard-charging Wienen was able to move up into the third place position before the checkered flag.

Wienen got off to a much better start when the gate dropped for the main event in the ATV MX Pro season opener. Coming out of the first turn in fourth, Wienen fought to second place before the end of the second lap.

"In the first heat I didn't nail the start and came out outside of the top five and ended up third,” Wienan said. “In the main, I made some adjustments and was able to come out in fourth. Then I made some quick passes for third and then into second. I was dialing in some of my lines and applying pressure to the leader.”

With eight laps to go, the lead rider parted ways with his ATV and Wienen moved into first place. That was a position Wienen refused to relinquish on his way to the first win of the ATV Pro MX Season.

“About half way [through the race] I was able to take over the lead when the leader made a mistake,” said Wienen. “I was able to ride on to the victory on a rutted, rough track that you had to be on your toes all day long. I was able to ride 18 laps mistake free, and that made the difference at the end of the day.”

K&N gives Chad Wienen a big shout-out on another great start in the Pro ATV class. The season will continue at Underground MX in Kemp, Texas for the second round of racing in the 2017 season.
