The retro-styled Jeep Commander was designed new from the ground up, but there is no question about its heritage, one look and you know it's a Jeep. K&N Engineering developed a performance air intake system (57-1548) for 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Jeep Commander and 2005-2009 Grand Cherokee models with the 4.7 liter V8 engine.

The K&N performance air intake system for the 2006 Jeep Commander 4.7 liter V8 is one of the first on the market for this vehicle. K&N tests have shown an estimated horsepower gain of 9.4 HP @ 4397 RPM with the 57-1548 intake.

"The horsepower gain is really good for a vehicle that does not have a mass air flow sensor," said K&N Performance Kit Manager Bert Heck. "The engine compartment is really busy and even though the Commander does not have a lot of open space our engineers were able to knock out a system that provides good power gains." The development side of 57-1548 was extensive when it boiled down to the design work, said Heck.

This air intake system uses a conical shaped chrome top high-flow air filter (RF-1048) and powder coated aluminum heat shield in place of the vehicle's stock air box. The result is an air filter that captures harmful particles, provides more surface area, improves air flow, and increases service life. This K&N air filter performs for up to 100,000 miles before service is required depending on driving conditions. Improving the air path between the filter and the motor is the rotationally-molded high-density polyethylene tube. It offers the most flexibility in design and outstanding horsepower numbers. It takes about 90 minutes or less to install this system with simple hand tools. It is covered by K&N's Million Mile Limited Warranty and is 50 state street legal.

“The fresh air and clear blue skies in Northern California got us pumped up as a team,” said Lindsay Waggoner. “Donner Ski Ranch is our favorite spot to compete. The crowds come out in record numbers and we get to see a lot of familiar faces.”

Unfortunately, Team Waggoner had gone the entire year without a first place finish. “We were determined to give it our all at this event,” said Waggoner. “The courses were set up with very tight turns, steep climbs and big drop-offs.”

At first glance the courses looked straight forward but as soon as the competition starts and rocks move and the terrain changes. On Saturday, Team Waggoner finished every course and were placed in the top of the pack going into Sunday.

Cody and Jim Waggoner had a rough stat on Sunday. “The B2 was a tough course that seemed to give everyone a hard time,” said Waggoner. “It was a tough climb but we were lucky enough to make it through without taking out the cones.”

There were also difficult runs. Cody and Jim Waggoner had to face deep holes dug at the base of hill climbs by the previous competitors. “I can’t complain about any bad runs especially since everything on our buggy is working great,” said Waggoner. “Our custom built CBM motor equipped with K&N filters is running perfectly. K&N performs well in the higher elevations. I have the torque I need to push me through tough courses.”

Team Waggoner kept their 2nd place event finish at Truckee and earned a 2nd place WE ROCK Series title.

In September, Team Waggoner will head to the Grand Nationals in Hannibal, Missouri.

CORR Series Rockstar Makita Team LeDuc Ford Trucks have Tough Time at Chula Vista

The CORR Series drivers of Rockstar Makita Team LeDuc had a rocky weekend at Chula Vista International Raceway. Todd LeDuc finished fourth and third in the two Pro 2 races, and his father Curt LeDuc, faced mechanical problems throughout the weekend.

Team driver and Pro Lite rookie Brian Deegan was 10th on Saturday and 19th on Sunday. His rear end housing broke down when he was racing and was ranked in eighth place.

Curt LeDuc finished ninth in Saturday’s Pro 4 race. On Sunday, the steering in his Ford broke at the start of the 16-lap feature. “This was my worst weekend in five years,” said Curt LeDuc. “We’re just running these trucks harder than we’ve ever run them and we’re going to have to change some of the preparation procedures.”

Despite the disappointing race results, only Curt LeDuc lost a position in the point standings, dropping from sixth to ninth in the Pro 4 Class. There were also a lot of mechanical problems for many other teams at Chula Vista.

Todd LeDuc went into the fourth race of the CORR Season’s eight events third in the Pro 2 standings and remained in third overall, 45 points behind the leader. Kyle LeDuc stayed fifth in the Pro 4 Class and Deegan was 10th in Pro Lite overall. “I didn’t have any mechanical problems at Chula Vista,” said Kyle LeDuc. “I slid into a dirt bank really hard on Saturday and a bunch of dirt went into the wheel and got it off balance. My truck was bouncing so hard I thought I had a flat tire, so I slowed down a bit and that hurt me.”

Pomona, California will host the next big CORR race of the season and the LeDuc family plans to turn things around. “We’ve done well in Pomona before,” said Kyle LeDuc. “We’re going to try and get pole positions and have good races. There is still a long way to go for the championship and Todd and I are still in contention.”

Western WE-ROCK Title Returns to Rock Crawlers Brad and Roger Lovell

Team Lovell had one goal during the entire 2008 WE-ROCK season, to build the single best truck for rock crawling and rock racing. Brad and Roger Lovell said they are honored to announce they have once again been crowned the Western We-Rock Pro-Mod Champions. Pro-Mod is the dominant class in rock crawling.

“The first day the courses were brutal,” said Roger Lovell. “We tested the durability of the FABTECH Ranger with K&N Engineering products in new ways. We wedged and clawed through the first courses then lined up for the B2 course.”

The B2 course was dug out and a monster. Most teams were struggling to keep enough of their vehicles on the B2 course so they were not disqualified. “Our idea was basically to pop a wheelie and then slam the rear axle up and over the rock,” said Lovell. “After a couple of attempts the truck shot to the side and I had a bone jarring landing on the skid-plate. We then tried a new line and bounced right up the granite. At the end of the day, the effort put us 9 points behind Shannon Campbell.”

Day two brought more difficult courses and an additional finals round. The pressure was on for Team Lovell. Brad and Roger played it smart to prevent any rolls or breaks. They had to take chances for a win and unfortunately hit a cone. Team Lovell entered the final round with a 29 point lead over third place.

Just before the brothers had their shot in the finals round, a miniature rain shower descended on the course. “I could see the rain drops hitting the rock and rolling away the dust for the guy in front of us,” said Lovell. “It was so dusty it didn’t even get the rock wet at first. When it was our turn it was raining harder and all that dust turned into a coat of slick mud. We never have to worry about our K&N air filters under conditions like this. K&N kept the debris out of our engines and prevented our sensors from clogging up. There is also a slight taper that gave us the clearance and flexibility we needed.”

The Lovell successfully fought the wet track and big holes by the rocks. With less than a minute left, Roger Lovell guided the Ranger into the final notch and Brad Lovell hit the gas. The FABTECH Ranger cleared the end gates.

The 2008 WE-ROCK Series was a great success for Team Lovell. Only 12 points kept them from a perfect season. They now have 5 consecutive series championship wins.
