The 2006-2008 Ford Explorer Gains 11 HP with K&N Air Intake System

The Ford Explorer is one of the best handling truck based SUVs on the market. Ford made substantial upgrades to the Explorer for the 2006 model year. In 2007 there were only minor changes. It comes with a long list of standard equipment and important safety features.

K&N Engineering has developed a performance air intake system (57-2573) that is street legal in 50 states for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Ford Explorer with 4.6 liter V8 engine. K&N dynamometer testing shows an estimated gain of 11 horsepower at 4500 rpm.

To immediately see the benefits of a K&N air intake system, simply replace the Explorer’s original intake assembly with the 57-2573. Cooler outside air is drawn through a washable and reusable K&N chrome top air filter (RF-1048) for more power and filtering capacity.

A powder coated steel heat shield replaces the stock air box and protects the K&N air filter while isolating it from engine heat. The 57-2573 uses the OE Mass Airflow Sensor. Although the MAF is re-positioned to gain the benefits of additional horsepower, no computer programming is required.

The K&N air intake system can be installed in 90 minutes or less with simple hand tools and comes with the famous K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty.

All four Rockstar Makita Team LeDuc drivers will compete in rounds seven and eight of the highly-competitive closed course racing series. “I think we’re in good shape, said Curt LeDuc. “All four of our drivers are in the top 10 in point standings.”

Pro 2 class star Todd LeDuc won both main events in Pomona, California and is third in the overall standings. His younger brother Kyle LeDuc is fifth in overall points in the Pro 4 class. Team leader Curt LeDuc has a trio of top 10s and is sixth overall in Pro 4. Freestyle motocross legend Brian Deegan, a novice at racing on four wheels, has three top 10s and is tenth overall in the Pro Lite Class.

“I’m happy that we’re close in points,” said Kyle LeDuc. “We’ve made a statement so far this year with my Rockstar Makita Ford. We’ve qualified on the pole and we’ve run up front, but my goal is to win.”

Both brothers have won in Chula Vista previously and enjoy racing at the facility. Kyle LeDuc has taken the checkered flag there four times in the Pro Lite Class and Todd LeDuc has three wins in Pro 2, including last year’s season finale.

“The track is huge and it’s exciting,” said Kyle LeDuc. “It’s more of a race track than Pomona, with ups and downs and lefts and rights. It’s an awesome track.”

LeDuc’s two new Ford trucks are equipped with K&N Engineering products. “We’ve had a lot of changes but one thing that has remained is our relationship with K&N Engineering,” said LeDuc. “K&N products are reliable and work for us on the track. The races will be televised live on SPEED-TV Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. PST and NBC will carry Sunday’s races from noon to 1:30 p.m. PST.

Rum Run Boat Races from Long Beach to Catalina Island and Back Action Packed

The endurance race pits high-performance boaters on the Rum Run, a race from Long Beach to Catalina Island and back. The Worthy Risk Team faced challenges from the start.

At their home base in Lake Tahoe, California they had to fix a valve on their Mercury 525 Racing Engine. “We ended up installing our backup engine from last year’s racing season,” said Jack Crouse of Worthy Racing. “Our backup engine had a cracked cylinder and Brad had to borrow his wife’s motor, which was only half-built.”

Johnson and Crouse finished the motor in hours and retrofit it to the engine on the day they had to drive to Long Beach. They took their 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD truck equipped with a K&N air intake system to the race. “We drove all night, and the good news was our K&N air intake kit gave us better gas mileage and additional tow power,” said Johnson. “The bad news was we had zero sleep and when we hit Long Beach, they rented our hotel rooms to someone else. We spent the next several hours setting up shop at the dry pits.”

Worthy Racing took its new motor in the Catalina Channel for test runs the next morning. “Everything worked great,” said Crouse. “Our pits were on a nice strip of lawn overlooking Long Beach Harbor. We decorated it with a K&N Engineering banner and passed out K&N product brochures and K&N decals.”

On race day Team Worthy Risk lined up behind the pace boats. The green flag came down and it was time to drag race. “The turn one marker came up fast and we were tied with three boats for the lead,” said Johnson. “We backed off at the marker because there was no room. We were squeezed out by bigger boats. We continued through the chop. Our K&N oil filter (HP-6002) worked great. It did its job as always.”

Five foot swells came in sets when they hit the open ocean. “We hit the first swell at 95 mph and slammed down hard,” said Johnson. “Our GPS system flew out of the cradle and hit the firewall behind our heads. It disappeared, and along with it went our navigation system.”

As Catalina Island came into view Worthy Risk went dead in the water due to ignition failure. “We were victim to a tiny electromechanical device, but it was a wild seven minutes,” said Johnson. “All three boats in our class broke down and we ended up in third place. Everyone came home a winner.”

K&N's SU-1308R replacement filter is for asphalt racing use only. The specially designed 2 ply filter is less restrictive and produces more air-flow CFM (cubic feet per minute) for it's 1340cc, DOHC liquid-cooled 16 valve engine. The panel air filter features K&N's washable reusable design and uses the stock screws to hold the air box lid in place.
