IHRA World Nationals Victory for Brian Folk in Camaro Roadster

Sportsman drag racer Brian Folk has a racing resume that goes back two decades. He started the 2007 season with seven IHRA national event wins and nine NHRA national events. He has five IHRA division titles and numerous big dollar bracket races. At the end of 2007, he added the one thing that was missing to his resume, a World Championship.

His nemesis in 2007 was defending Super Rod champion Steve Furr. In September, Folk’s luck began to change at Osceola Dragway in Indiana. He destroyed his engine in his Super Rod Cavalier and brought in an untried Camaro Roadster.

“We built the Camaro from the ground up at our Folk Race Cars shop,” said Folk. “We had been running our Cavalier since 1990 and when the engine blew we decided to finish out the rest of the year in the so-called “Rat Rod.”

The first race in the Rat Rod began one of the most phenomenal runs in IHRA Sportsman Class history. Folk drove the Camaro to back-to-back victories at Osceola, giving him the opportunity to challenge Furr for the World Championship.

Folk took the Rat Rod to Milan, Michigan for his third Super Rod victory in two weeks at the IHRA Suzuki Motor City Nationals in Milan Dragway in Michigan. Folk passed Furr by a single round and the Super Rod championship was up for grabs.

At the IHRA World Finals in Rockingham, North Carolina, Folk had never won an event, but Furr dominated at the facility over the last several seasons. Both racers won their first and second round matches.

In round three Furr came up just short against Peabody Harrell. “I knew that when Steve Furr came up short I was just one win light away from the World Championship,” said Folk. “I raced against former IHRA World Champion Steve Corker, and I was able to move on to knock out James Sessoms in the final round to claim the IHRA World Nationals victory.”

Folk uses K&N Engineering products. “The K&N oil filters are our biggest asset,” he said. “The dirt stays out of our engines and we get the filtration we need to help us get to the championship.”

Folk plans to paint the undefeated Rat Rod before the season starts up again in February at the IHRA opener in Florida. “We’re thinking about red and white stripes,” he said. “It will look good on the car. No one saw this win coming, it’s amazing to be the 2007 IHRA Super Rod World Champion.”

“We really like racing at Kings Speedway,” said Allard. “It’s also great to see all the fans come back and support the Cotton Classic. I hope we can do this for years to come.”

Allard lined up on the outside of the front row in the K&N Filters No.0 at the start of the main event. As he took the lead, the yellow lights came on and forced a complete restart. This time Allard had a great jump off turn four and led the 21 car field in the contest.

There were numerous stops throughout the race for hazards and it slowed the flow. Allard had nothing to worry about until the midway point. San Jose’s Tim Kaeding was able to move around Ronnie Day for second place. Allard was able to keep a safe distance between himself and Kaeding as the laps wound down and the checkered flag waved, Allard brought the K&N Filters No. 0 home in victory lane.

“The whole crew gave me a great car,” said Allard. “The dirt on the tracks is very tough on racing engines. Out team knows we don’t have to worry because we have the K&N air box. It’s easy to maintain and allows us to achieve maximum horsepower every night. Horsepower equals winning.”

Allard plans to race in Australia after Christmas and began with the World of Outlaws in February.

The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Hosts the Las Vegas Bracket Nationals

The 2007 Las Vegas Bracket Nationals have gone away with the Thanksgiving leftovers, but the holiday race was a blast for K&N Engineering Project Manger and Super Pro driver Jonathan Fiello.

Teams from 20 states and two Canadian provinces converged on the four-day Thanksgiving weekend race at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. “Competition was tough,” said Fiello. “There were at least 180 cars.”

Fiello owns a 2003 undercover dragster with a 635 cubic inch big block Chevrolet with K&N Engineering products. It is fuel injected on alcohol and runs about 1200 horsepower.

For the Bracket Nationals, he raced Carl Cannavo’s 2007 Yancer Dragster 598 cubic inch big block Chevrolet. “Carl is my good friend and we make a good team,” said Fiello. “He does the set up for the race and I do the driving.”

Competitors had to go nine rounds for a final opportunity to win $5,000. Fiello did well on Thursday and lost in the 6th round. “On Friday, I lost in the 3rd round and Saturday I lost in the 6th round,” he said. “On Sunday we blew a head gasket in the motor. Overall, it was a blast.”

The bracket nationals put a lot of wear and tear on the race vehicles. “We used K&N oil filter (HP-3002) and a K&N air filter on Carl’s car,” said Fiello. “The K&N air filter keeps the dirt and particles from the track out of the engine and increases horsepower. The oil filter meets all our demands as racers. The heavy duty construction and sturdy one-inch wrench nut make oil filter removal quick and easy. The K&N oil filter also keeps our motor clean.”

Fiello did not participate in the $45,000 Ultimate Gambler. “The car was struggling too much for us to spend the $1,000 entry fee,” he said. “Kyle Seipel defeated K&N racer Peter Biondo to claim the big money.” However, Biondo won the Madcap Ultimate Engine Giveaway Presented by Mike’s Transmissions.

The next race for Fiello will be at Las Vegas in late January. He will start testing his own car there in the NHRA Top Comp Class.
