Defending World Speedway Champ Third at British Grand Prix

Jason Crump is familiar with being on the podium. The two-time World Speedway Champion is back on track after a few setbacks. He finished third at the Millennium Indoor Stadium at Cardiff, Wales.

A record breaking crowd of 41,247 die-hard speedway fans attended one of the most prestigious events on the Grand Prix calendar. The British fans watched a new local hero rise to victory in his first year of competition. Chris Harris was the surprise winner as he stormed from behind to take the win ahead of American Greg Hancock and Australian Jason Crump.

Crump is a three-time winner of the British Grand Prix, and was pleased with his latest result. He added 15 valuable points to his overall standings. “I am just happy to be back on the podium after a pretty lean year so far,” said Crump. “It was important for me to get a good result to remain a contender in the title chase. The points gap has narrowed just a little bit but it is heading in the right direction.”

Crump crashed in round three of the 2007 World Speedway Series at Sweden’s Eskilstuna arena. He was unable to continue the race after suffering injuries to his shoulder and collarbone. He refused to give up and raced at Denmark’s National indoor Arena in Copenhagen, Sweden two weeks later where he added nine points to his overall standings.

“It’s five down and six to go, so there is still time to play catch up with the leaders,” said Crump. “I just need to get a great result in Prague in four weeks and then maintain that same consistency for the remainder of the series. I will be giving it my best shot.”

Crump won the Under 21 World Championship when he was 19-years-old in 1995 using K&N Filters. “I also won the World Speedway Championship in 2004 and 2006 using K&N products,” said Crump. “It is my plan to use K&N exclusively until the end of my career.”

Crump is currently in 6th place in the World Championship Standings.

Corvette Racing Takes Second Place at 24 Hours of Le Mans

Endurance and a flawless run put Corvette Racing on the podium in the 75th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ron Fellows, Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen drove their No. 63 Compuware Corvette C6.R to a second place finish in the GT1 class and sixth overall in the world’s most famous sports car race.

“It’s the biggest road race in the world,” said No. 63 car Crew Chief Dan Binks. “I use to dream about going to France for Le Mans. This is as good as it gets.”

Rain hit at the start of the 22nd hour. The team put full rain tires on the Corvette and when the deluge began the GT1 field slowed by more than a minute per lap.

The No. 009 Aston Martin DBR9 had about a one-lap lead as the cars raced to the afternoon finish line. At the wheel of the Corvette Fellows was gaining as much as 30 seconds per lap. Nearly an hour before the end of the race rain caused a safety car period. As a result, a 10 minute final dash was not enough time for Corvette to beat Aston Martin.

“At the end I thought the rain could save us until the safety car put an end to that,” said Magnussen. “Ron was so fast at the end, he was fired up and it was cool to watch him. He was gaining seconds every lap, and we were calculating when he would catch the Aston Martin. It was a great race between two strong rivals.”

The No. 63 Corvette C6.R made 27 pit stops during the race and completed 342 laps, a distance of nearly 3000 miles. “We run a special K&N Engineering Air Filter,” said Binks. “In France, dirt is a huge problem. There is a lot of gravel and they put kitty litter on the track to soak up the oil. K&N protects our engine. The only thing we had to do to the No. 63 at the pit stops was change out the tires and put in fuel. It started up every time. The car had a flawless run.”

The runner up finish ended Corvette Racing’s three year winning streak. The team finished third in 2000 and second in 2003. “We’ve used K&N every year,” said Binks. “We get really good filtration.” Corvette Racing has 8 consecutive podium finishes on its resume.

Corvette Racing’s next event is the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut on July 6 and 7.

Apex Open at Perris, California Intense Battle for Teen Kart Racer

Carlsbad, California teen Jacob Pearlman scored a 3rd place finish in the HPV-2 class in the Apex Open at Apex Raceway in Perris, California.

JP had to learn the redesigned and rebuilt track while his crew had to figure out the set up in just two 5 minute practice sessions. “The crew’s biggest challenges were determining the proper gearing, adjustments to the chassis set up, along with carburetion and spark plug tuning,” said Jacob’s father Richard Pearlman. “All of those factors were constantly changing variables as the racing day went from practice to preliminary. We faced heat in the afternoon and cool evening air.”

In the first heat race, JP was on the outside of the 4th row, in the 8th position. He picked up one spot at the start and was about to grab two more spots. Unfortunately JP’s heat race came to an abrupt end at the end of the back straight. He was hit hard from behind by a racer going too fast into the turn. The speeding kart T-boned JP’s No.25 DPK/Birel with K&N products in the middle of the turn and both karts spun into the dirt. “On the first lap I was passing,” said Jacob Pearlman. “The next thing I knew I was in the dirt with another kart hooked on top of mine.”

Despite the hard impact his kart was not damaged and JP took a spot on the outside of the 2nd for the final 12 lap heat race. He drove smoothly to finish the final heat in 2nd place.

The starting order for the 16 lap main was determined by combining the results of the two heat races. Despite a DNF (did not finish) in the first heat, Jacob was put in the 3rd spot for the main.

At the drop of the flag, the first two rows of karts dove into the first turn and emerged single file in the same order they started, with Jacob in 3rd spot. There was an intense battle for 3rd which allowed the two lead karts to really open up. After 7 laps of racing one of JP’s main competitors for third made a slight miscalculation and went skidding off the track.

There were no other karts to contest 3rd position and JP began to close the gap on the 2nd place racer. The leaders caught up to lapped traffic and it slowed JP’s advance.

“We were pleased with how well Jacob adapted to the new track,” said Richard Pearlman. “We were also pleased with our K&N products. JP uses the K&N Air box and Filter in all classes of national and regional sanctioned International Kart Federation (IFK) racing including HPV-2, HPV-4, Junior Supersportsman and Junior Sportsman.”

JP will return to the Apex Raceway in Perris, California on July 16 for round 7 of the Gatorz Champ Car Rotax Max Challenge.
